Vintage Roos Cedar Chest with a seal tight lid that was patented. Made in Forest Park Illinois. It has a lovely Victorian motif and a small narrow tray that folds down into the cedar cabinet. It measures 45" x 19" x 17 half inches tall. Roos Manufacturing Co. was started by Otto's brother, Edward. The company split and Ed moved to Forest Park, IL in 1918 and changed its name to the Ed Roos Co. of Forest Park. In the 1920 federal census, Otto Roos is listed as President of a wooden wares business of RMC. By 1930 Ed Roos Co. had reached its peak production period and became the largest chest manufacturer in the world, employing 400 people, and using three million feet of timber a year. Following Edward Roos death in 1943, the government placed restrictions on the company during World War 2. The company fell on hard times and was sold off in 1951, only to be closed four years later in 1955.
